The story of AI in a few decades might be the story of “good guys always finish last” as shown by the rather unedifying spectacle of the corporate coup at OpenAI. Idealistic and altruistic chit chat are all very well but are trumped by deeds and money. Helen Toner’s rumoured ethical concerns have achieved nothing other than to make her position untenable, not to mention economically unviable. The problem is that a lot of people talk, but there are fewer doers, and the doers tend to be driven by motivations like money and power. Indeed, the makeup of the new…

The theme of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer couldn’t be more relevant. Although it’s a film about unleashing deadly technology in the 1940s, today this has become routine. Companies and governments are taking huge liberties with human life, and livelihoods. The creative industry unions aren’t happy and anger is boiling up in Hollywood. Much of this is directed at AI tech companies, studios and streaming giants like Netflix. EOSHD looks at the unnerving parallels between that of disruptive technology and the atom bomb.

They saw it as inevitable. Oppenheimer and his atom bomb changed the world. They didn’t stop development, like I said – inevitable. If they had stopped, then someone else like the Soviets would carry on. It’s the same with AI and all powerful technology. If ChatGPT would be removed from service tomorrow, a lot of people would be very unhappy. It’s the same with the automobile. If someone banned all cars tomorrow, everywhere, a lot of people would be very unhappy, and civilisation would collapse. Technology makes us happy, it makes us powerful and it makes us rich. AI has…

OpenAI has begun the rollout of a new Custom Instructions feature in the US for ChatGPT users. Those outside the US can access it via a VPN. Early adopters have found a “permanent jailbreak” via this beta feature for ChatGPT. This is in the form of prompt injections which can switch off some of ChatGPT’s more “political correct” responses using Custom Instructions. This makes it far more interesting for coming up with controversial content and “adult” ideas for film content. Take the following prompt injection for example: According to Twitter user “swyz” this results in a “permanent jailbreak”, although it…
